You don't have to be a breeder, exhibitor or expert to be an important part of the Birmakredsen. The vast majority of Sacred Birmans are first and foremost beloved family members - on the couch, in bed, in the middle of the keyboard and preferably wherever their humans intended to sit.
Knowledge for everyday life - from the first day at home to the senior years.
A good cat life is more than food and a warm couch
A Sacred Birman is often very attached to its people. It wants to be with, follow and know exactly what is going on. Therefore, good cat welfare is not only about physical health, but also about security, relationships, play, climbing, good hiding places, undisturbed rest and the opportunity to use its natural instincts.
A cat's needs change throughout its life. The kitten needs to learn about the world. The adult cat needs to be kept physically and mentally active. The senior cat may need help with things that were previously easy. Here, we follow the cat throughout its life - not just the first few months.
🐾 Time to get readyKittens move at the earliest in accordance with the FIFes 14-week rule.
🩺 Pet cat = neuteredThe Burmese Cat Association's position is that a pet cat must be neutered before it leaves the breeder.
🌳 Safe outdoor lifeWe do not recommend free-range. A cat-proof garden, balcony or aviary provides experiences with fewer risks.

All your everyday life in one place
Select a topic. Some cards lead to the Birmakredsen's existing guides; others jump directly to the new sections further down this page.
Of course, I can't guarantee that your people will be fully educated. But we can try.
When the Birman lies in the chair, the chair is occupied.
A closed door is a personal attack and should be investigated immediately.
The food bowl can be half full and still be completely empty.
The keyboard is a warm place to lie down with a built-in attention button.
A cardboard box is more expensive in cat logic than what came in it.
Play isn't just for kittens. Adults can be trained too.
If I hide more than usual, you should notice.
If I suddenly change habits, it's not always "just something I do".
My shipping crate should be a familiar thing - not a harbinger of the end of the world.
And yes: I know you just made the bed.
Practical answers
The topics you often only search for when you're in the middle of them
Here you will find the most important information. In case of illness or doubt about the cat's health, the veterinarian should always be the one to assess the specific cat.

🍗 Food & weight
There is no one serving size that fits all Birmans. The need depends on age, size, activity level, neutralization and the energy content of the food, among other things. Use the feeding guide as a starting point - not as a checklist.
Weigh your cat regularly so that small changes are detected early.
Also consider the body shape: the ribs should be palpable without a thick layer of fat, and the cat should have a visible waist when viewed from above.
Sudden weight loss, weight gain, or changes in appetite should be investigated.
Treats also count towards the day's energy intake.

🧠 Behavior
Behavior is information. Scratching, meowing, hiding, nocturnal restlessness or soiling can be normal cat behavior - but a sudden change can also be a sign of stress, pain or illness.
Always start by asking: What has changed?
In the case of uncleanliness, illness must be ruled out before calling it a “behavioral problem.”
Give your cat more options: resting places, heights, hiding places, scratching opportunities and play.
Punishment rarely solves the problem and can increase insecurity.

🐈 More cats in the home
Just because two cats can live in the same house doesn't necessarily mean they want to share all the resources. Conflicts can be quiet and manifest as blocking, staring, chasing, or one cat staying away from certain areas.
Introduce new cats gradually - don't just put them together.
Distribute trays, food, water, sleeping places and high positions in several places.
Allow for distance. Cats should be able to pass each other without being pushed.
Keep an eye on the quiet cat; it's not necessarily the one who's "doing well."

🚗 Transportation & vacation
Transport is easier when the crate is part of the home and not just brought out five minutes before the vet visit. Leave it open with a blanket and treats so it can also be a safe place.
Securely secure the transport box in the car.
Never let your cat run loose in the car.
When on vacation: choose a solution that suits your cat's temperament - for many cats, care in your own home is the least stressful.
Give the cat sitter written information about food, medication, veterinarian and your contact information.

🩺 Neutralization
Neutering means that the cat can no longer have kittens. In pet cats, it also prevents a number of hormone-controlled behaviors such as heat, mating urges and marking.
The position of the Birmakredsen is clear: A cat sold as a pet must be neutered before it leaves the breeder. This makes the agreement clear from the beginning and ensures that responsibility is not passed on to the new family.

📄 Papers, ID & insurance
Save pedigree, purchase agreement, vaccination information, neutering documentation, insurance policy and chip/ID information. Feel free to make digital copies. In the event of a change of ownership, relevant records must be updated.
Call immediately in case of difficulty breathing, collapse, severe trauma, suspected poisoning or unsuccessful attempts to urinate.
The new RECOVER guidelines from 2026 change several old first aid tips. We have therefore created a separate, illustrated guide for, among other things, cardiac arrest, choking, heat stroke, burns, poisoning, low blood sugar and heavy bleeding.
Is this normal? How much should it eat? Why is it hiding? Should I be worried? No cat owner knows everything from the start. The goal is not to make everyone a cat expert, but to make it a little easier to be a good person to your cat.
