Your first cat – getting off to a good start

No previous cat experience needed. Learn how to choose a cat, prepare your home and care for a kitten or adult. We specialise in the Sacred Birman, while much of this advice applies to all cats.

Before choosing a cat

Think about personality, social needs, activity, space, time and long-term costs. Every cat is an individual; a breed description can guide you but never replaces attention to the cat in front of you.

Prepare your home

Have suitable food, fresh water, litter trays, scratching places, hiding spots, toys and a secure carrier ready. Keep toxic plants, loose cords and unsafe windows out of reach.

Food, water and litter

Choose a nutritionally complete diet suited to the cat’s age and needs. Provide fresh water daily and clean litter trays regularly. When moving home, begin with familiar food and litter when possible.

Play, sleep and reassurance

Cats need daily activity, quiet resting places and control over social contact. Give newcomers time to settle in. Reward calm, positive behaviour instead of using punishment.

Coat, teeth and health

Introduce grooming, dental checks and gentle handling gradually. Discuss vaccination and preventive care with your veterinarian. Seek veterinary attention for illness signs, including breathing trouble or difficulty urinating.

What does a pedigree mean?

A pedigree documents a cat’s registered ancestry. Looking like a breed is not the same as having registered lineage. A pedigree alone does not guarantee health or responsible breeding.

Sacred Birman, Birman and Burmese

The Sacred Birman is known for blue eyes and white paws. Burmese is a different cat breed; the geographical name Burma can cause confusion. Birman enthusiasts may use affectionate nicknames.

Find a kitten and a breeder

Ask about welfare, socialisation, health records, documentation and the breeding environment. Our breeder and kitten lists offer profiles and listings you can investigate further.
