For generations, the Sacred Birman has been accompanied by a temple legend. It poetically explains the cat’s golden body colour, dark mask, sapphire-blue eyes and white paws.

Mun-Ha and Sihn

In the classic story, Kittah monks live with white, golden-eyed cats and worship the goddess Tsun-Kyankse. When the monk Mun-Ha is killed during an attack, his cat Sihn stays beside him. The cat’s eyes turn blue like the goddess’s, his coat takes on a golden glow, the points become dark, while the paws remain white as a symbol of purity.
Why we tell the legend

The legend has had enormous importance for the breed’s identity and name. It therefore belongs on a website about the Sacred Birman – but it must not be presented as historical documentation.
The history project’s principle: The legend and the archival history are shown side by side, but kept clearly separate. When we write about specific cats, breeders, stud books and shows, we rely on contemporary sources.
