100 Years of the Sacred Birman

A century of blue eyes and white paws.

A hundred years cannot tell the whole story. Yet 1925 remains an important date in the history of the Birman and its place in the European cat fancy.

Why 1925?

1925 is widely used as the year of the Birman’s early recognition in France. The breed’s development cannot, however, be reduced to one day. Our research follows the names, cats and people through sources from their own time, rather than relying only on later retellings.

In 2025 Birmakredsen marked the breed’s centenary. It also gave us a reason to look forward: how could we bring Birman enthusiasts together around both the history we inherit and the memories we create?

From the 1920s to a living breed

  1. 1925
    The centenary’s starting point

This year is traditionally associated with recognition of the Birman in France. The detailed sequence continues to be investigated in contemporary sources.

  2. 1926
    Birmans shown in Paris

French breed-history sources describe Birmans at Paris cat shows in 1926. Names, images and studbooks offer valuable clues.

  3. 2025
    The centenary

Birmakredsen marked 100 years of the breed. The celebration prompted discussions about a larger community event.

  4. 2026
    An idea becomes Breed BIS

Following a breeder’s question and JYRAK’s positive response, a special Breed BIS day is planned for 21 November 2026 at MAGION.

The legend of the Sacred Birman belongs to the breed’s cultural history. Our research distinguishes legend, later accounts and verifiable evidence from original books, studbooks, catalogues and newspapers.

How the centenary inspired something new

Birmakredsen began discussing a larger event. A breeder’s question and an enthusiastic yes from Susanne Wehnert at JYRAK led to plans for Breed BIS 2026.

15 November 2025 · JYRAK, Hedensted

The day we celebrated 100 years of the Birman standard

On 15 November 2025, Birmakredsen marked the centenary at the JYRAK cat show in Hedensted. The original celebration programme, prepared in September 2025, gives us a documented view of the plans for that day.

The original programme proposed the following activities:

  1. 01

Welcome from Birmakredsen and a short introduction.

  2. 02

Centenary speech and a shared toast.

  3. 03

Birman parade introducing the cats by name, age and colour variation.

  4. 04

Group photograph of Birman people and cats.

  5. 05

A shared table with cake, snacks, sparkling drinks and conversation.

  6. 06

Closing remarks and an invitation to share memories.

Conversations at this centenary celebration helped inspire an even bigger gathering for the breed: Breed BIS 2026.

15 November 2025 · Memories from Hedensted

The people, the Birmans and the small moments

An anniversary is not made memorable by a date alone. It is the cats, their people, the volunteers and everyone who lends a hand. These are the details we can trace in Birmakredsen’s own accounts written around the celebration.

01 · Cats and exhibitors

More than 30 Birmans

Birmakredsen’s account published on the anniversary itself described more than 30 Birmans. Before the show, we had mentioned 16 different point colours and patterns among the entries. The latter was a pre-event figure, not a verified count of cats actually present.

02 · Gifts

A contribution from Arion

Arion supported the celebration with sponsorship, for which Birmakredsen expressed thanks. Products and gifts helped make the day special for exhibitors and their Birmans.

03 · A thank-you

JYRAK’s hard-working volunteers

Birmakredsen thanked the people working behind the scenes at JYRAK and presented a couple of bottles of sparkling wine to the team. A small, tangible reminder of the volunteer work behind a cat show.

04 · Community

More than a list of results

Breeders, pet owners, exhibitors and helpers all belong in the story. We do not yet have a complete, verified list of people who took part in the anniversary celebration specifically, so we will not publish a guessed list.

What is documented, and what is not?

The Birman parade, anniversary speech, group photo and shared table were included in the original programme dated September 2025. The programme confirms the plan, not necessarily that every activity took place. The memories above draw on Birmakredsen’s contemporary accounts around 15 November 2025. No photographs belonging to JYRAK have been copied. Names and photos will only be added when their context and rights are established.
